MAX A. SWORD was born August 10, 1960 in the home of his Grandmother Millis in Vernonia, Oregon, the son of Alexander F. "Bill" and Blanche "Faye" Sword. He was raised and received his education in the Vernonia community, having graduated from the Vernonia High School, Class of 1979. Max served as the Student Body President during his Senior year in high school. Following high school, he attended Western Business College in Portland, where he majored in accounting. Max made his home in Vernonia until 1995 when he moved to Silverton, where he had resided since.

He had worked as a heavy equipment and machine operator with his father and brother in the Sword Logging Business since 1987.

at home. Max was a member of the First Christian Church in Vernonia and a member of the Silverton Elks Lodge. He was a member of the Vernonia Golf Club and the Evergreen Golf Club in Mt. Angel. For several years, Max served as the chairman for the Vernonia Logging Show.

He enjoyed golfing, trapshooting and dirt biking. Max also enjoyed many weekend activities such as skiing, boating and hiking with the Mile High Adventure Club.

Max died Saturday, April 5, 1997 from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He is survived by his parents, Bill and Faye Sword of Vernonia; a brother and sister-in-law, Scott B. and Holli J. Sword of Silverton; a sister and brother-in-law, Kala F. and Chris Cota of Vernonia; and five nieces and nephews; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.



The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions to the Vernonia Alumni Scholarship Fund, in care of Vernonia High School, 399 Bridge Street, Vernonia, Oregon 97064; or to the First Christian Church, 410 North Street, Vernonia, Oregon 97064, in his memory.
