MARY VERDA SMITH SEPTEMBER 21, 1913 - SALEM, OREGON FEBRUARY 10, 2002 - PORTLAND, OREGON She was united in marriage to Roscoe Kelly Smith on July 21, 1930 in Hillsboro, Oregon. Following their marriage they made their home in Vernonia for ten years before moving to Sweet Home. After eleven years in Sweet Home they moved to Fortuna, California but returned to Oregon in 1956, settling in Portland. Mary and Roscoe owned and operated the Western Auto Store in the Big Dollar Shopping Center in Portland. They later returned to Vernonia, where they owned and operated the Western Auto Store. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe, on September 12, 1968, after celebrating over thirty-eight years of marriage. Following her husband's death, Mary continiued to make her home in the Vernonia community. Mary worked as a telephone operator for the Linn County Telephone Company in Sweet Home from 1948 to 1955. She later worked for General Telephone in Forest Grove, Cornelius and Beaverton until 1975 when she retired. She was a member of the Vernonia Evangelical Church. Among her interests, Mary enjoyed gardening, quilting, and carpentry work. Mary was also preceded in death by her parents. Mary passed away February 10, 2002 at an adult foster care home. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Marvin R. and Rayetta Smith of Portland, Oregon; a sister, Barbara M. Casciato of Portland, Oregon; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 4800 SW Macadam, Portland, Oregon 97201 or to the Casey Eye Institute, 3375 SW Terwilliger Blvd., Portland, Oregon 97201 in her memory.
